Slovakia Introduces New Rules on Foreigners’ Residence Permits
The Slovak Parliament has approved a comprehensive amendment to the Act on the Residence of Foreigners, introducing significant changes that will affect new and existing applicants from July 1, 2025. The changes particularly impact those seeking residence based on business activities, as well as those intending to switch their residence purpose.
Key Changes
Business Residence Permit
• Applications must now be submitted exclusively through Slovak embassies abroad, eliminating in-country application options.
• A yearly quota of 700 permits will apply in 2025.
• Applicants must present a business plan and proof of financial coverage via two bank account confirmations.
• Residence will be issued for a period of 3 years upon approval.
Change of Residence Purpose
• A change to business residence will only be permitted after 24 months of lawful residence.
• Switching from study to business residence is allowed only after graduation (from a Slovak secondary school or any university).
Additional Notable Updates
• National visa validity extended from 90 to 120 days.
• Photographs no longer required for most applications.
• Proof of financial means is no longer required in most cases, with exceptions including: - Business residence - Long-term residence - Children born in Slovakia or the EU - Applications based on invitation verification
• The subsistence minimum used for financial assessments has been raised to €284.13.
Important Notes
These changes affect all new residence applications submitted on or after July 1, 2025.
